Wayne & his Grandparents
Wayne fought the odds from day one. He was born prematurely due to a car accident his Dad & Mom were in. The doctors
gave him a very dim future. He had Cerebral Palsy and their diagnosis was death in a short time. However, Wayne
was a fighter and sure proved them wrong. His parents just couldn't cope with his disability. They dropped him off at
his grandparents while they went shopping for a few hours that turned into 16 years. His parents, Cecil & Gladys and baby
brother Gordon, moved to the States. Wayne loved it at his Grandparents house so he really didn't miss his parents.
Maw and Bill surrounded Wayne with the love he needed and life was good. Wayne had a tutor three days a week but had to do
all his homework from memory as he wasn't able to write. Wayne spent about 4 yrs. in Nursing Homes after Bill
passed away and Maw got too old to take care of him. He did try living with his parents in the States but his life was miserable
so he begged his Mom to take him back to Woodstock and put him in a Nursing Home which she was happy to do. The Homes
weren't really the place for such a young man. He was surrounded by the old, the sick, the senile and the dying.
In 1973 after a lot of encouraging words from his Doctor and his Uncle, Wayne took the big step and moved out of the Nursing
Home into Participation House, Markham.
